Discipline Hopping Grants

The closing date for this year's Discipline Hopping Grants scheme has been announced as 12 November 2008. This scheme is an annual competition supported jointly by BBSRC, EPSRC and MRC, with additional funding also provided by other councils where appropriate. This grant scheme provides short-term support to pump-prime interdisciplinary research, with the aim of fostering longer-term collaborations between engineering and the physical and life sciences. It provides contact time between established researchers in relevant disciplines by awarding them funds for replacement salaries to 'buy out' their own time. Grants can last from three months to a year, and it is expected that requests for funding will have a 100 per cent FEC value in the region of £125,000. The remit is deliberately very broad and the emphasis is on the 'hop' itself. The scheme is administered by MRC on behalf of the other councils. More information can be found on the MRC website.

From the terms and conditions:
"Researchers supported on open-ended or fixed-term contracts may apply for grants, and may request funds for their own salary."
